Who Airalo suits

Airalo suits travellers who want prepaid mobile data abroad with no contract. It sells plans for Europe, the USA and worldwide, from small data packs to unlimited data.

If you are heading to Europe, Airalo's Europe eSIM covers 41 countries, so one plan can span a multi-country trip. You pay once for the data and the days, with no monthly bill. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked.

Most travel eSIMs are data only, so keep your UK SIM switched on for calls and texts. Internet calling apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime still work on Airalo data.

Not sure how much data you need? Compare the plan sizes and days in our table against your trip length, or see eSIM for Europe trips.

How to set up Airalo

Setting up an Airalo eSIM takes four simple steps, most of them before you fly.

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones usually do.
  2. On Wi-Fi at home, buy your plan in the Airalo app. Install it by scanning the QR code or tapping install.
  3. Abroad, set the Airalo eSIM as your mobile data line. Its days usually start when it first connects to a network there.
  4. Turn off data roaming on your UK SIM. Keep that SIM on for calls and texts.

Calling apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime still work on the eSIM data.

Questions people ask

Is Airalo good value?
Airalo can be good value, depending on your destination and data needs. It is prepaid, with no contract and no monthly bill, so you pay once for the data and the days. Check its price in our table, which ranks plans cheapest first, and compare it with rivals before you buy.
Does my phone need to be unlocked for Airalo?
Yes, your phone must be unlocked to use an Airalo eSIM. A locked phone will not accept one. It also needs eSIM support: iPhones from the XS and XR (2018) onward have it, as do recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones.
When do Airalo plans start?
Airalo plans usually start when your eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. You can install it at home on Wi-Fi before you go. The days usually begin at that first connection, so check the plan's validity before you buy.
