What a social tariff is

A social tariff is a cheaper broadband plan for people on certain benefits. It is for people on means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Lower monthly costs help you keep your home broadband without stretching your budget.

The benefits named here are examples. Check whether your own benefit qualifies on the provider's website before you apply.

Not on benefits? You can still find low prices in our cheapest broadband table. Every table shows the date its prices were last checked, so you know the numbers are current. Sort by price or speed to find the right fit.

How to get one

To get a social tariff, check the provider's eligibility page, apply, and wait for its benefit check.

First, check eligibility. Open the provider's broadband page and look for its social tariff. You need a means-tested benefit, such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

Next, apply to the provider for its social tariff. The provider then checks your benefit before you move onto the deal.

Already have broadband with that provider? You can usually move to its social tariff without an exit fee. Next, compare the monthly prices on our broadband deals page.

Social tariff or a cheap normal deal?

Compare the social tariff's monthly price and any stated price rises with the cheapest standard deals. Our tables rank standard deals by real cost, cheapest first. Real cost means every monthly price, every stated price rise and any setup fee, averaged over the contract. Each table shows the date its prices were last checked.

Work out the real cost of your social tariff in the same way. If a standard deal costs less overall, it is the better choice. Compare the cheapest broadband deals to see which one costs you least.

Questions people ask

Who can get a broadband social tariff?
People on means-tested benefits can get a broadband social tariff. That includes people on Universal Credit or Pension Credit. If you get either benefit, a social tariff is the first option to look at before a standard deal.
Can I switch to a social tariff mid-contract?
Yes, you can usually move to your provider's social tariff without an exit fee. This can lower your bill if you already get means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit.
Are social tariffs slower?
Speed depends on the plan you choose, so check each social tariff's advertised speed before you sign up. Advertised speed is the figure the provider states, not a promise of what you will get. Your actual speed also depends on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi.
