How the calculator works

The calculator adds your electricity and gas costs using the current price cap rates. Each cost is your usage times the unit rate, plus the daily standing charge over 365 days.

A kWh (kilowatt-hour) is one unit of energy. The unit rate is what each kWh costs. The standing charge is a fixed daily fee.

Rates come from Ofgem's current energy price cap for Great Britain, average, paid by Direct Debit. They update the day a new cap starts. Standard credit costs more.

Want to test your own tariff? Enter its unit rates and standing charges. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing you type reaches us.

Find your own usage

Find your yearly kWh on your energy bill or in your app, often shown as annual consumption or estimated annual usage. kWh means kilowatt-hours, the units your meter counts. Enter your own figure for electricity and for gas, so the result reflects how much energy your home uses.

Ofgem's typical home uses 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year. Your home may use more or less, so your own figures give a truer starting point.
