Who really needs gigabit speed

Most homes do not need gigabit speed. Speeds of 150 to 500Mb cover streaming, video calls and gaming for most households. Start there unless you know you need more.

Gigabit broadband suits a few kinds of home. Big households with many devices online at once may notice the extra room. Creators uploading large video files benefit too. So do gamers downloading huge game updates.

Not sure what your home needs? Try our broadband speed calculator to see which speed fits. Then check the table below and sort by speed. Pick the lowest speed that suits your home, because faster is not always better value.

Get the speed into every room

Your router and Wi-Fi decide how much of your speed reaches each room. Deal tables show advertised speeds, so the speed you get can be lower.

Place your router in a central, open spot. Keep it away from thick walls, metal objects and cupboards. Raising it off the floor often helps the signal travel further.

For a large home, a mesh system can spread Wi-Fi further. Mesh means several linked units that work together as one network. For the steadiest speed, plug your computer or games console straight into the router with a cable. Not sure what your home will get? Try the broadband speed calculator.

Upload speed matters too

Upload speed is how fast your home sends information out to the internet. It matters when you make video calls, send large files or back up photos to the cloud.

Part-fibre broadband (FTTC) uses fibre to the street cabinet and copper for the last stretch, so its speed falls with distance. Full fibre runs fibre all the way into your home, with no copper at all.

Full fibre suits steady video calls and quick backups. Your router and Wi-Fi also shape the speed you get. See full fibre deals for your address.

Straight answers

Questions people ask

What is the fastest broadband in the UK?
Full fibre is the fastest type of broadband you can buy in the UK. It runs a fibre cable all the way into your home. Part-fibre is slower because it uses copper for the last stretch. Sort our table by speed to compare the full fibre options.
Do I need 900Mb broadband?
Only if many people and devices use your connection at the same time. A 900Mb deal shows the advertised speed, and the speed you get depends on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi. Check how your home uses the internet before you pay extra for the fastest package.
Why is my broadband slower than advertised?
Deal tables show the speeds providers advertise, and your actual speed depends on your address, router and Wi-Fi. Part-fibre broadband (FTTC) is slower, because its speed falls with distance from the street cabinet. Test with a device plugged into your router to see your speed.
