Who BT broadband suits

BT broadband suits people who want fast full fibre and do not need a landline. BT runs mainly on the Openreach network, which BT Group also owns. Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home. The seven BT packages in our table range from 35Mb to 900Mb.

It suits households that want a speed guarantee. BT lists guarantees of 425Mbps and 700Mbps, and advanced threat protection comes included. BT also sells TV and mobile, so one provider can cover all three.

BT broadband comes without a landline, so look elsewhere if you need one. BT may not be the cheapest option for you. Compare its real cost with rivals in our table before you decide. Our cheapest broadband guide shows more options.

Network, speeds and availability

BT broadband runs mainly on the Openreach network, which BT Group also owns. Our table lists seven packages, with advertised speeds from 35Mb to 900Mb. BT also lists speed guarantees of 425Mbps and 700Mbps.

BT offers two connection types. Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home. Part fibre uses fibre to the street cabinet and copper for the last stretch, so it is slower and its speed falls with distance.

Availability depends on your address. BT offers Full Fibre where your postcode can get it, and Part Fibre where it cannot. Check your postcode on BT's website first. Speeds in our table are advertised speeds, so your real speed also depends on your router and Wi-Fi. Next, sort the table by speed, then compare rivals on our cheapest broadband page.

What it really costs

BT broadband contracts last 24 months, and our table shows the real monthly cost of each package. BT states any mid-contract price rise in pounds on its deal page. Our table adds every stated rise, so you see the full cost before you sign. Setting up online costs £0, with no activation fee.

BT lists up to £300 towards leaving fees, paid as bill credit, which lowers the real cost. It also lists advanced threat protection and speed guarantees of 425Mbps and 700Mbps. New customers only.

Our table ranks deals by real cost, cheapest first, so start at the top. Then compare BT with Sky broadband and Virgin Media broadband before you decide.

Questions people ask

Is BT broadband good value?
BT broadband can be good value, but only when its real cost beats rivals for your needs. BT offers a £0 activation fee online, speed guarantees of 425Mbps and 700Mbps, and advanced threat protection included. Compare its real cost in our table with rivals, and check your postcode first.
Does BT raise prices mid-contract?
Yes, BT can raise prices during your contract, and it states each rise in pounds on its deal page. Our table builds those rises into the real cost, so you can compare the true price. Since 17 January 2025, Ofcom rules say any price rise in a new contract must be shown in pounds and pence when you sign up.
How do I switch to BT?
To switch to BT, contact only BT, and it tells your old provider and arranges the move for you. This is Ofcom's One Touch Switch, so you do not need to contact your old provider yourself. Check your postcode first, because Full Fibre or Part Fibre depends on your address.
