Who needs gigabit speed
Gigabit broadband suits big households, gamers and people who send large files often. Most homes need less, so check your needs before you pay for extra speed.
Many people in one home go online at the same time. Phones, laptops, consoles and smart TVs all share the line. Gamers gain from a fast, steady connection. 4K streaming and large uploads, such as sending big video files, also benefit from extra speed.
If you mainly browse, stream in HD and video call, you do not need gigabit speed. Speeds in our tables are the speeds providers advertise. The speed you get depends on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi. Use our broadband speed calculator to work out what your home needs.
Can you get it?
Gigabit broadband runs on full fibre or cable, so start by checking your postcode.
Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home. Part-fibre (FTTC) is slower than full fibre, and its speed falls with distance.
Most providers, including BT, Sky and EE, sell over the Openreach network. Alt-nets, or alternative networks, build their own networks instead, such as CityFibre, Hyperoptic and Virgin Media. Coverage differs by street, so check your postcode, not just the provider's name.
Enter your postcode on the provider's site to see which speeds your address can get. Then sort our table by speed. Want full fibre only? Browse full fibre deals.
How we rank gigabit deals
We rank gigabit deals by real cost, cheapest first. Real cost alone sets the order, for every provider.
Real cost is your total spend over the contract, divided by the number of months. It includes the monthly price, every stated rise and any setup or delivery fee. Any reward card or bill credit comes off, at its cash value.
Since 17 January 2025, new contracts must show price rises in pounds and pence. Percentage and inflation-linked rises are banned in them.
If real cost ties, the faster broadband or bigger data allowance goes first.
Straight answers
Questions people ask
- What is the cheapest gigabit broadband?
- The cheapest gigabit broadband is the deal at the top of our table, ranked by real cost. Real cost is your total spend over the contract, averaged per month, including any stated price rises and setup fees. When two deals cost the same, the faster speed goes first.
- Do I need 900Mbps broadband?
- Most homes do not need 900Mbps broadband. Choose it only if many people or devices use your connection at the same time. Deal tables show the speeds providers advertise, and your real speed depends on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi.
- Is gigabit broadband available in my area?
- Yes, if your address can get full fibre, so check your postcode on the provider's site. Full fibre runs a fibre cable all the way into your home. Part-fibre broadband uses copper for the last stretch, so its speed falls with distance from the street cabinet.
