The big difference
The big difference is the network: Sky sells broadband over Openreach, while Virgin Media runs its own cable and full fibre network.
Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home. Sky's broadband in our table runs at 900Mb, full fibre. Virgin Media's packages range from 132Mb to 2000Mb, over cable and full fibre. Advertised speeds depend on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi, so check your postcode first.
Both deal pages state no price rise in pounds for these packages, and both use 24-month contracts in our table. Since 17 January 2025, Ofcom rules say a new contract must show any price rise in pounds and pence. Percentage and inflation-linked rises are banned in new contracts.
Choose Sky if
Pick Sky if you want TV and broadband from one company, or a 900Mb full fibre package.
- You want TV and broadband together. Sky sells them as bundles. Sky Stream works over broadband with a small box, no dish.
- You want full fibre. Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home. Full Fibre Gigafast is available to 79% of UK homes, so check your address first.
- You receive qualifying benefits or want help with leaving fees. Sky has a social tariff for people on qualifying benefits. It also offers up to £200 towards leaving fees. See Sky broadband deals.
Choose Virgin Media if
Virgin Media suits you if you want fast broadband without a landline and free installation.
- You do not need a home phone line. Virgin Media broadband comes without a landline, so you only sign up for internet.
- You want speeds up to 2000Mb. Packages in our table run from 132Mb to 2000Mb, over its own cable and full fibre network. Full fibre means a fibre cable runs all the way into your home.
- You want extras or a bundle. There is no setup fee, Netflix Standard with Ads is included, and some bundles add TV or an O2 SIM. Compare Virgin Media broadband deals and check your postcode.

- Which is faster, Sky or Virgin Media?
- Virgin Media has the fastest advertised package in our table, at 2000Mb against Sky's 900Mb. Sky's package uses full fibre, a fibre cable that runs all the way into your home. The speed you get depends on your address, your router and your Wi-Fi.
- Can I switch from Virgin Media to Sky easily?
- Yes. Ofcom's One Touch Switch lets you move broadband to a new network by contacting only Sky, which tells Virgin Media and arranges the switch. Sky also offers up to £200 towards leaving fees, called switching credit, with its broadband. Sky's broadband contracts run for 24 months, so check the price over the full contract before you sign.
